After going through virtually every line of code in the app I've solved the problem I was having, turns out there were two pieces of code in the site that were causing problems. There was a SQL query doing some unorthodox things when search terms were fed into it, and also the use of <cffile> in parts of the site seems to have caused memory to leak like water through an old roof.... You live and learn...
