A couple of comments:

* Could we say "`nlayer` is the **size of the** dimension of the vertical 
coordinate variable.", adding "size of the"
* Keeping an optional `nsigma` term variable does go against [Guiding Principle

 ): _To avoid potential inconsistency within the metadata, the conventions 
should minimise redundancy._ However, I can see a reason for keeping it if it 
is useful to know in circumstances when you don't want to/can't  read the 
entire `zlev` corodinate array. Is that a real use case? In the case of 
cf-python, which will implement this, it would never need `nsigma` without 
`zlev` because its only concerned with calulating `z`, and so has to read 
`zlev` anyway.
