I have changed the text about `nlayer` as you suggest. Thanks for the 
correction.

I propose that we should keep `nsigma` because removing  it would be 
backward-incompatible, in the sense that existing data created with previous 
versions of the convention would be invalid in the new version. That sounds 
like an unnecessary nuisance, so the next best thing is to check that there 
isn't an inconsistency.
