I took a job that I found on CF-Jobs a number of months ago and relocated to boot (at my own expense); they did provide a small amount of relocation assistance, but it wasn't much.
Now after all these months, I'm finding the people running this company are idiots. Of the two, the business guy seems okay for the most part, but doesn't like the area and wants to move away. The programmer (my boss) is from the area, and is building a new house. He spends 90% of his time working on the house and little time in the office. He claims to be a long-time CF coder, but from what I've seen of his code, he looks pretty Intermediate to me. He's beyond anal... he wants my coding style to EXACTLY mimic his, right down to the tiniest details of formatting and spacing. It's inane (yes, inane... and insane too). I write in a quasi-Fusebox style, and I've always written clean code. But his coding requirements are getting to the point that I'm ready to leave. On top of that, they hired a girl to help test the project I'm working on, and she isn't doing it and they don't seem to care; instead I get the blame if a bug is found. Granted, I'll take responsibility since I wrote it, but when you're told that she's there to help find the bugs so you can fix 'em, what do you do? On top of that, early on I was promised a percentage of the profits from this project, as my hourly rate is pretty sad. As of late, there's been no mention of it. I'm on the verge of saying okay it's time to figure this out or I need to move on. But as it is, these idiotic coding requirements make me wonder if their plan is to eliminate me once I finish all of this re-styling. Early on he set certain standards and we negotiated on some and he agreed. But as of late, that's changed and he wants it ALL his way. I have a pretty big issue having to work under somebody that I know full well I could code rings around. Several people have departed since my arrival; after talking with a couple of them, I have concluded that the nature of the folks running this company is to drive people insane and make them quit, rather than fire them. I know for a fact they managed to create a hostile work environment for one of them; the other, they simply fired. They also tend to take disciplinary action against people without any warning... a tactic that is illegal in this state. Heck as it is, it's possible he reads this list, so it will be entertaining to see if he reads it and figures out who wrote it. That may hasten my departure. This is a vent more than anything. I'm all for cooperation and teamwork, but there's a point at which a boss demands too much. It's very clear that this guy has absolutely no clue how to manage people, and is in fact a micromanager. I've been an independent for 6+ years and took this job because of the promise of something bigger. Now that that promise is turning into a lie, I think it's time to go back to being independent. I get more done, I learn more, I meet more people, and I make more money too.
