You will probably want to go to Windows 2000 Server, not Windows 2000
Professional. Windows 2000 Professional is the successor to Windows NT
Workstation. As such it is not really designed for server tasks.
Consequently, it is missing quite a few of the utilities and tools that are
available in the server editions. In addition, I believe you can only host a
single Web site off of Professional, though I've never tried so I don't know
that for sure.

All in all, Windows 2000 security is much improved over Windows NT. Your
biggest problems will probably come from learning the difference between the
two, not from security issues inherent in the operating system itself.

Windows 2000 is generally a lot easier to maintain, due in part to
enhancements in the GUI, improvements made in the administrative tools like
the now MMCed Services control panel, as well as new applications for remote
management like netsh, telnet server and terminal services.

Microsoft has also fixed a couple of the more annoying aspects of hosting on
Windows NT. For instance, you can now alphabetize the Web sites in the
Internet Information Server MMC window.

However, all that said, if your current setup is working fine and you do not
need a feature that is only available in Windows 2000 or Internet
Information Server 5, then you may want to reconsider upgrading: don't fix
what isn't broken.

Subject: NT 4.0 to 2000

Hello,

We are considering upgrading from NT4.0 sp6a to 2000 professional. Is this
a good move? I am not overly familiar with 2000 and am a little concerned
about its security. At the same time I have heard that CF 5.0 is
considerably faster on 2000.

Are there any good resources regarding the upgrade? From a CFSERVER
perspective is it warranted. Are most of you already upgraded?

Thanks for the help!

Brook
