Just a thought, in iis isn't there somewhere where you can specify the
error page for a particular error code?

oooh, i'm back and I think I might be on the right track.

Using a simple ASP to return a 500 to the client, IE will show the page 
content if any.

With a similar CF script, IE shows the default "page cannot be
displayed" 
error.

The difference in the responses - not much apart from content-length is 
missing from the cf response.
