There is info on all this on the jvmstats FAQ page at Sun.

One thing not in there I found is....
Add a system var, assuming you are on windows:
name= JVMSTAT_JAVA_HOME
value= path to the root of JDK5.0

Then what I do is cd path to the root of JDK5.0\bin  path to
jvmstat\bat\visualgc <vim>
