hey, well you have several options here - Flash plugin for one.  

The principle is the same if you use Java or ColdFusion to get the file -
Java will not make the download any faster than if you used ColdFusion, both
use FTP and both will download at the same transfer rate.

You can even download via SQL and serve up via ColdFusion once it has
finished:

Fact is, using Java aint giving you anything which ColdFusion cannot.

Neil, I bet you could use CF to fetch via FTP, then CFCONTENT to
deliver the file to the client, but this is an extra step.  For a big
file that could be an issue.
