The actual image store is on a HP n class server with attached RAID, HPUX
(urgh). What we also do is "age" the files, if they've not been accessed
within two months the files are archived off onto a DVD jukebox running a
program called disk extender, (which is run by an NT server). This creates a
virtual drive on the server and can store a lot more than 12,000.
There is a degradation in some respects, finding something using the OS is
pretty difficult, but by using the DB u get a link direct to the files you
require, and yup again there is some degradation but its not huge and most
of the files are for re-use internally.

Right now, the files are in one directory on the HD. As the system gets
bigger, we will be adding additional disk arrays to the system. The database
has a field for each image indicating where it is located on the filesystem.
If the site grows more than I expect (1 million images) then there is the
capability of moving images to a separate network file server.

In what way? I don't have much experience with LDAP, but isn't it mainly
used for authetication?
