I think this is where all the confusion lies, too.  Sean explained it very
well, and I am grateful for that.  The problem is when locking is
generalized and not explained in depth with specific examples of where you'd
definitely need to and not need to lock, it becomes "You don't have to lock,
but you might want to depending on the application."
