Actually this very thing happened to Atari during the first home video game boom. Atari patented hundreds of concepts (including, for example, the "joystick", "trackball", "Collision Detection", etc).
They then tried to keep competitors out of the market by claiming patent infringement but failed and were forced to license to the likes of Coleco and Magnavox.
