practical brainpower on this list than , well anywhere I know of.
MS has devolved & delayed Longhorn into Shorthorn -- Preview sometime
2006 & said to be a major conversion effort..
The Linux community is trying desperately to provide a Desktop & many
see the MS delay as a window (of opportunity).
Apple has OS X Tiger scheduled early 2005 (about the same time as
Blackstone)
Tiger is a 64-bit OS, has the equivalent of MSFS (the major feature
removed from Longhorn), and a lot of things N/A in Win or Linux/Unix
There have been rumors that Apple has an OS X that runs on Intel CPUs.
Some MS apps (Office, less Access) are said to have better, more
advanced versions that run on OS X (than XP).
OS X Sells for $99 whereas a winXp upgrade sells for upgrade for $249.
OS X comes With all the 'Nix goodness, XWindows, + Java, Perl, PHP,
Apache, etc.
Big omission is a robust db -- but there are several open-source
options.
Rhetorical questions:
What would be the acceptance if Apple released OS X Tiger on Intel,
Solaris, etc. Say 1Q 2005?
Could Apple grab the Linux/Unix desktop?
Could Apple make a dent in the windows desktop?
Is this the time and place?
Should they?
