Rick, I said that with tongue in cheek. I do certainly prefer **ix over doze. In all actuality, I prefer OpenBSD over all for a myriad of reasons.
For people that are new **ix environments, Fedora or SUSE is great because you can install the GUI and not have to deal as much with the shell / bash very much. If you're running ColdFusion, you'll certainly need a Linux license. If you don't have one, stay with doze, but don't do XP. I'm not going to bash Microsoft any further, but anything I'll ever do in M$ again will be virtual instance running on VMWare's ESX. I've lived the nightmare of having to manage farms of dozens of doze boxes installed directly on the hardware and I'll never do that again. Warmest Regards, Phillip B. Oh, man, Phil...I'm trying to get my blood pressure and stress level DOWN and you want me to go Linux at the same time I'm installing Apache, CF7, et al, at the same time! I'd go into tech overload and have a stroke! I've considered Linux, but...every time I consider it, I hear this voice inside my head saying, "Be afraid...be very afraid..." ;o) So, Phil, since you're obviously a Linux man, how hard is Linux for a *first time, know nothing about Linux except it's software" user to install, configure, and maintain? Rick, Great news on going apache. Why not just throw out that M$ OS entirely and go Linux? If I am understanding you, you're wanting to run xp pro in production? Really bad idea if so. XP Pro is not geared for production use and I can't imagine the security issues you'll have. I hope you have a good firewall at least? So, I've decided to use Apache instead of IIS as a web server. Does this mean that my web server can now serve multiple sites from Win XP Pro, instead of having to have a server OS, such as Win 2000 Server, Win 2003 Server, or Win Web Server? I'm talking about a production server.not a development server.
