I once, about a year and a half ago got thrown feet first into the fire on 
maintaining *nix environment installs of CF, and I have to say, they're not 
that bad.  Apache is easy to config, and I find CF to be a lot more stable 
overall on decently configured server.

I also agree, Fedora is a good place to start.  It comes "pre-packaged" with 
apache and some basic web stuff you'll need.  The things I always find tricky 
are when I want to add new programs, because sometimes... they get persnickity.
