" how do they expect a web application to be built with a database? "
of course they don't let you, they expect that you will now go spend tons of
mula on their db server. You know when people say that really the ms platform
isn't as free as they say? Well it's things like this that they get ya on. It's
just like .net, sure its free, IF you run it on a windows server (which you
gotta spend bucks on) and of course then you will probably run sql server
(which you gotta spend big bucks on), how does "free" look now?

outta curiosity lets say Rick sets up a few different boxes from scratch with
CURRENT systems and products, none of this "well i love windows but I gotta run
a 6 year old version of it", I mean the good stuff, current stuff.

A) windows box - with server license, coldfusion standard, iis & sql server and
add additional trimmings (like anti-virus, firewalls, etc..)...
Total Cost: $?
Montly time and maintaince: ? hours

B) Linux box - fedora, mysql or postgre, coldfusion standard, apache and add
additional trimmings (like anti-virus, firewalls, etc..)...
Total Cost: $?
Montly time and maintaince: ? hours

and any other systems?

I think for now I'll just setup Apache, CF7, DW8, & MySQL 5
on my laptop and test there.

When I've completing testing, I'll set up a new server with
Windows 2003 Standard or Windows 2003 Web Server as a
production server.

I just did a little reading about Windows 2003 Web Server Edition
and it's curious that MS says you can't use SQL Server or even the
SQL Server Express Edition with it. The describe the Web Server
Edition as being built for developing web applications...how do they
expect a web application to be built with a database? I figure I can
use MySQL on it, which I would anyway, but they seem to be shooting
themselves in the foot with that limitation...

" but I could still use Win 2000 Server "
It's always nice to have to regress back 6 years to get a system of theirs
that works right, while windows 2000 was probably their best one aren't they
stopping updates to it now? Which brings up the point of if you do go with a
windows server you will be spending a whole lot of time doing updates to it
and if its a production server then you have lots of testing to do after
each update to check for compatibilty problems. You will have that on the
other os servers as well but not nearly as much.
