I don't know how your accounting works (you sound like you work for a
corporation, but mine works any way I want it to, since I'm the one doing
the work, billing, and paying the bills. If I don't have to spend any money
on network AV or a firewall...well, that calculates out to $0...

This is a perfect example of why it would take longer...I'd have to spend
3 hours just to find out that I needed to run those commands and how to run
them!
I just have zero experience with Linux, so I know it'll take much longer to
install
*and* complete final setup.

And all the stuff you mentioned at the end of your email...don't do any of
that stuff.
Would if I could or even knew I needed to, but most of it I've never even
heard of,
so it's not
calculated into the time.

Remember, I don't have a degree in this stuff, nor am I self-educated beyond
what
I run into that needs attention. If it causes a problem somewhere along the
way,
I learn about it and fix the problem. But if it doesn't cause a problem,
it'll never get attention.

I'm just one of those "put it together as best you can and see what happens"
techs.

There are risks I'm sure with not "hardening the TCP/IP stacks" or "pulling
the plugs
on hard disks while the system is running to check to check if the alarm
goes, etc.",
(is that for security or what?) but there's also security overkill that may
or may not be necessary
for a one server operation. I don't have a dedicated IT department full of
people who know how to
do all that stuff...maybe one day I'll be bitten by not doing it...then I'll
do it...but for
now, it seems like overkill...

You want to run CF on a box with 2 GB max?

Accounting doesn't work that way.

Why so much more then Windows? What is so hard about typing:
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install apache
apt-get install mysql
apt-get update

I think they are both very low, unless you already have a considerable
investment in automation of certain tasks. For instance hardware acceptance
tests (memtest > 24 hours but unattended, pulling plugs on harddisks while
the system is running to check if the alarm goes etc.) and backup
configuration (including test of full backup / restore cycle) take me way
longer then that. And the only reason things like hardening the MS TCP/IP
stack & configuring the Windows firewall and configuring the second, third
etc. CF instane take me much less time is that I have done it so many times
that I have the scripts ready for that (but then I have to count the time to
create the scripts towards the task).
