Out of curiosity, why do you want to upgrade to Vista? Because that's probably going to be a more important determining factor in what version to buy than anything else. For example, on my laptop I'm installing Vista Ultimate. I decided to do that because I want features that only exist in Ultimate (Media Center functionality). If not for that, I'd install Vista Business, because I need to join a Windows domain and I need touch-screen support. If you just want to use CF, you can install that on any version, since CF comes with its own web server. This is perfectly suitable for the vast majority of developers, in my experience. You don't need any web server at all. Unless you're using web server-specific functionality in your applications, or you need to know how to manage a specific web server, I would recommend not bothering with installing a web server at all. CF 7 runs fine on Vista, although I had to do a silent install (there's a technote on how to do this). If you want to do ASP.NET 2 development, you'll want Business or Ultimate to get IIS 7. But, keep in mind that there aren't any production IIS 7 servers, because IIS 7 isn't available on any version of Windows Server yet. Your ASP.NET code will work fine on IIS 6 when you deploy it, but there are some ASP.NET features specific to IIS 7. SQL Server 2000 isn't supported on Vista, but it can be made to work.
