You make too many assumptions, Richard.

I inherited a site that was developed already. I have the job of
maintaining it and building new stuff on it. It's on HostMySite
shared space. I also look at things from teh other side of the
fence too, because i have a small hosting company of my own, competing
with HostMySIte. A very minor part of my business.

You have had a pretty poor experience with HostMySite you say. Well i
say we've had a good experience with them. Any time we needed
anything doing, they did it straight away. I dont need any CFX tags,
so that hasnt become an issue for us.

I'm not saying you're wrong, just saying you had that experience, we
had a different experience. What led me to comment in this thread
was Gerald's assertion that anyone in shared hosting would be better
off building their own server. I disagree.

yes SOME people would be better off doign that, others would find they
dont have the skills or the inclination or even the time available to
resist hacking, keep system software patched and up to date,
configuration well tuned etc etc etc.

For many people, shared hosting means you dont have to worry about all
the system stuff, there are specialists at the hosting company who
handle all that, You can spend your time and energy on the design
and coldfusion code.
