Andrew, people figured out how to do even more clever stuff than that, sprite multi-plexing and sprite in the border became pretty common place. Sprites in the border was actually invented in the early 80's by 1001 crew.
every heard of FLI (Flexible Line Interfacing), it was a way of creating hi-resolution pictures with all 16 colours available available on every rasterline, instead of the usual 3 per character. Someone also used a VIC chip trick to create hardware bitmap scrolling using the D011 register, pretty amazing stuff resulted from that.
