It's not a matter of being flippant. If you want to do .NET development, you'll probably end up buying Visual Studio. If you want to do any sort of development, you'll end up buying computers, OSs, storage, etc, etc. People buy cars to drive to work. If you're a plumber/carpenter/mechanic/handyman, you can spend a LOT on tools. That's just the way things are. I don't have an XBox. I don't have cable.
