Wow I certainly didn't expect that reaction.... I think the article is intended to be funny rather than offensive. Yes its an extreme view but I think its a (poor?) way of making a point. And I think the guy has a stack of valid points, most of which are not in the first few paragraphs, but anyway take it or leave it.

I don't think the intention is to be reasonable I think he's making an extreme case for shock/humour value. Also how does your comment about "pushing the envelope" relate back to other coding? Yeah you're probably right, the article does not take a very holistic approach to the issue. It also focuses very much on the lowest common denominator but that's not really a new concept (http://www.w3c.org/Consortium/Points/). At the moment I am really liking simple sites for heaps of reasons. Look at www.lonelyplanet.com, a simple, attractive, low bandwidth layout and a focus on content & clarity. Just need some work on their markup.
