I agree Mark. Personally I like it clean and simple too. But...
<rant> I don't mean to disparage the lowest common denominator. I think its very important and too often overlooked. My point (made a little too strongly due to excess coffee) is that the LCD should not be a universal requirement. As the author points out the web is for everyone and there are some people out there with power computers with big screens high resolution and loads of plugins and perverse varieties of web browser who would like to see stuff made for them too. There is the broad public and then there are sub cultures with niche needs/desires. Not everything has to be made for everyone. It's a question of who is your audience which I think is the point that Steve was, in part, alluding to. Clearly this is a sore point for me but basically what I'm saying is that I don't think you should have to please all of the people all of the time which is what a lot of these arguments seem to say. </rant> Cheers Pete Pete- >A narrow minded champion for the lowest common denomiator. Yeah you're probably right, the article does not take a very holistic approach to the issue. It also focuses very much on the lowest common denominator but that's not really a new concept (http://www.w3c.org/Consortium/Points/). At the moment I am really liking simple sites for heaps of reasons. Look at www.lonelyplanet.com, a simple, attractive, low bandwidth layout and a focus on content & clarity. Just need some work on their markup.
