Well I think Macromedia made a big mistake in allowing Robin to walk out the door.
There are a lot of reasons why Robin and Macromedia might part company, and most of those reasons are none of our business. We need never know why Robin left, and there's no need for him to elaborate.
However whether he left of his own accord or because Macromedia restructured or whatever, I think they made a mistake letting him go. In my mind, Robin was one of their best assets in Australia, and one of the main reasons I made such a big personal commitment to ColdFusion years ago.
I had a guy rather like Robin working for me at Lexmark years ago, who was able to make the laser printers sing and dance like no one else could. He could take a feature intended for one thing, and tweak it and prod it until it did something else entirely. As a result there were large chunks of the state's revenue that could be attributed to this one guy's work on his own and in helping others make their targets. This guy caused so much unfair jealousy and unease amongst the upper management because he earned more than anyone else in the state, and probably more than a lot of the senior managers. But in my mind he was worth every penny and a lot more.
I've got no idea whether a similar situation is acting in Robin's departure, and its none of our business, but I reckon Robin must also be directly or indirectly responsible for a pretty large chunk of Macromedia's Coldfusion and flash revenue here. How the hell they let all that expertise and talent go I'll never understand.
As others have said, Robin's a straight-shooter, tells things the way they really are, and not how brochures paint them, and that's worth a lot to me.
If I was the CEO of Macromedia, I'd be doing whatever it took to keep him. I don't think they realise what they've lost.
Robin, you're a good man, and you will go from strength to strength. Good luck in whatever life deals out to you. And thanks for all the years of support, help and advice.
(oh yea and thanks for the FlashMX and the Ben Forta book!!! the only things I've ever won in my life!)
Cheers
