Is webmail is not an option? While I agree that profanity in a tech mailing list is kind of pointless (but sometimes inevitable...), there's always the option to unsubscribe and view the list via the web interface....
Ultimately, you can ask really nicely for people to stop using naughty words, but in the long run, unless we go into list nazi mode, it's all just a short-term social engineering experiment. (Woops, I said nazi too... do they filter that?)
