althought the xmlHttpRequest object has been around for quite a while -
it's only recently that comparable versions are now in mozilla and
safari.

IMHO, xmlHttpRequest if you want a (much) simplier way to run remote
calls than mucking around with a javascript/java solution, while still
powerful if you use XML as the transport media.
