I guess it's just my outlook/opinion of BD (and its ilk).  I see it as 
a
"poor man's CF", rather than an competitive alternative, so I figure it
should just do *exactly* the same thing, just cheaper.

Any particular reason for that position? BD does some important things 
that CFMX does not, so I don't see it as a bastard implementation of 
CFML by any means. Besides, if you look at the price for the J2EE 
version of BD bundled with ServletExec, you will see that the price is 
exactly the same as CFMX Enterprise.
