And we have things like "square root" which can't be a function as its result is multi-valued. Unless we want to do some arm-waving using terms like "principle-value". but we still call them "functions". The point I'm trying to make is that concepts get lost in the nitty-gritty of the technical definitions of "operator" and "function".
