successful with J.  You might take a look at these documents and see if

The latter three documents were written by Ken Iverson and were 
specifically designed for teaching/learning J.

Regarding a "reference Bible" for J, that's what much of the recent 
discussion in the Programming Forum has been all about.  It's currently 
in the planning and development stages.
