For me, the flashing and colour changes draw my eye in an appropriate way to
the area of the screen where I should be concentrating my attention.  MAYBE
it could be more subtle, but I don't see why this is important. I'd rather
see 10 more concepts illustrated.

You can fiddle with animations forever and still find flaws when you look at
them again.  Don't let perfection be the enemy of the good - or great, even.
