That bug report also points to this bug: http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=48922 Which might be the reason for the timeout. I'm experiencing blank pages with Apache and mod_php too (with the latest Debian php version from unstable) so it might be related to this too. The difference between both is that one of them segfaults (error 500), the other just stops all processing (and thay might be the cause of the timeout 504).
