I can confirm now that Cheroke 0.99.22 with php 5.2.9 works correctly. Or so 
it seems right now. No more error 500, no more timeouts (if you bump the 
counter in the admin section).

I had to downgrade all my php modules (thank god I had them on the apt 
archive), but all is good now.

So anyone experiencing either 504 timeouts or 500 server errors, give it a try 
with the previous php version (5.2.9).
