I guess I should have included that my engine temp on a 90
degree day running 65 at 3,000 is only 185-190 degrees. Without air. Around 200
degrees with air.

I have a question
regarding engine RPM. I have a 350 with Edelbrock Performer RPM's
hydraulic lifters, intake and carb kit with regular flat top pistons I built
about a year ago. The compression is normal for that of a 350 (8.5 to 1?)
and it runs just fine on 87 octane. The tranny is a 350 with a
1,800-2,400 stall converter and mild shift kit set at "towing" stage with no
added tranny cooling. My rearend is all new including axles and posi unit
with Richmond 3.36 gears.
**My question is
this.** On the interstate at cruising speed (65 mph) I am running 3,100
RPM's. Is this ok for long periods of travel say 6-8 hours? It seems
somewhere I read that you want to stay below 3,000
RPM's........
Also, what would be the
MAXIMUM RPM's a person would want to run at for long periods of time?
I have a similar combo in my Elky...350...8.5 to
1...87 octane...TH-350 w/shift kit and 3.08 Posi out back. I'm running 3000 at
just under 80mph on the highway.
We did this all the time back in the
days before OD (when Hone was new)...It's better to stay at or under 3k for
really long periods of time for longevity of parts, but as long as your
cooling is good and you're running a very good oil (read clean), then you
should be ok. I've run at 2500-3000
for 4 hours several times on trips with
the air on with no problems...it runs at 200-210 degrees.
