It's true that a lot of drag racers run a PG. I run one in my drag car
(67 Camaro).
Yes, powerglides are 2 speeds.
The choice of trans really depends on your combination. A light car
with lots of HP will work great with a 'glide.
They are considered (by some) to be more consistent for a few of
reasons: 1 less shift point, lighter weight, takes less hp to turn
them, and first gear is higher making for a less violent launch (less
fun, more consistent).
As always, everyone has their favorite combinations and opinions.
Someone asked about the shifting... They can be adjusted to shift hard
and fast.
Someone asked about rpm drop.... Mine drops very little, maybe
1000rpm. It definately stays well up into the powerband, and its not an
issue.
One thing that is nicer about the 3+ speed trans is that it allows the
engine to stay within a specified rpm range more. For this reason, the
PG requires a bit longer flatter torque curve.
A PG in a stock horsepower vehicle is most likely slower than with a 3
speed.
