Not under the hood of race cars.  I've only recently gotten into cars and I
don't follow drag racing to know whats commonly used.  Again...although a 1/4
miles is short and many gears wouldn't be necessary...it seemed to me that a 2
speed wouldn't allow you to stay in your optimum power range as long as a
tranny with more gears.  But I don't know drag racing well enough to know how
wide a race engine's power band is or to what RPM the PG shift would put you. 
Apparently they work so my assumptions are flawed due to my ignarance.

wasn't gonna leak oil all over the track)
