Hello Everyone:
Everybody has chipped around the corners, of why a Power-glide works in a
race car, but no one has really hit it yet. The reason is the race torque
convertor. The racing torque convertor helps the motor get up to a higher
RPM instantly. Often the motor doesn't have to make power below, say five
thousand RPM. So with the racing glide, the two speed acts more like a four
speed. The gears are like this:

1st. torque convertor assisted low gear
2nd. low gear
3rd. torque convertor assisted high gear
4th. high gear

Like someone else said, a race car will run faster with a two speed tranny,
than a three speed tranny, if you can get the car down to the 2200-2400 lb.
range. The 'glide further reduces the weight, and the drag produced by the
pump is less than a TH-400. I think everyone can see how a big block in
light car loves this combo. But many small block cars work well with the
Power-glide too. The trick in the convertor and the combination of parts.
