The reason that I ran a relay on my 67 ElCamino is that the wires that power the ign terminal on the fuze block are still quite small and the current has to run through a great distance ignition switch circuit and interior harness that has small wires too. By runnung a relay you can have a very short power wire and use a big a wire as you can find. I ran my #8 wire from the positive cable on the starter This helps create cleaner and higher coil discharge voltage that can add to lower et's. Using a relay is not to ease installation - it adds performance.
