the only thing i can say is i have personally seen what a blown clutch can do. in about 1970 my buddy had a 65 327/350 chevelle with stock bellhousing. the clutch  pressure plate took out half the firewall & floor combo, broke the transmission and he lost control of the car and crashed. he walked around on crutches for about 3 months too. i wish i had taken some pictures of what it did. i do remember the pressure plate was something like  3-3 1/2 feet long. seems to me for safety and also to keep your car in one piece a scatter shield is a good idea.
