Lojac,Don't bet on not massaging the drive shaft. The 350 and 400 came with a short and long tail shaft. The 350 WILL handle a big block but it has to be in good condition.  But I wouldn't recommend it unless it was rebuilt for your application. And the torque converter must match the torque of the engine. The 350 has 4 multi - disc clutches and 2 roller clutches. The 400 is the best choice. It has 3 multi - disc clutches, 1 one-way clutch and 1 roller clutch, detent solenoid,
and vacuum modulator to sense engine torque controlling line pressure. This alone makes it better over the 350. All torque requirements are met and you get the right shift points. Look for these codes on the 400....
1968  396 - CA
           427 - CB
           396 - CC ( Chevelle/Camaro)
           396 - CH ( high performance)
           396 - CH
1969  396 - CA
           427 / 390 HP - CB
           396 / 325 HP - CC
           396 / 350 HP - CE (Chevelle/Camaro
            427 / 335 HP - CF
Also....CG, CH, CL, CQ, and CY
and the famous 350 - 300 HP Vette.. CK
1970......  CB,(454) CG (police 454), CR.
1971......  CB, CF, CS and CY.
1972......  CD,(402), CF(454) CR and CS.
1973......  CR and CS.
These are all big block 400's. If you have a code you can't figure out I'll be glad to help. I have worked at GM Hydra-matic for the past 28 years. If I don't know the answer I can find out for you. One last comment, and this is my opinion only. The 350 was and still is a great transmission. It just wasn't built to take the torque of the muscle era. If you want a trouble free cruiser it can't be beat.

what about the TH350?  I will not need to shorten the drive shaft and this would make the swap easier.  Will the TH350 handle a Big Block?  What is the HP and Torque rating of a TH350 vs. a TH400.  Is the driveshaft shortening a easy process for a machine shop to do????  Is it expensive??

Thanks for all of the feedback,

the driveshaft will need to be shortened for a TH400 swap.  A 700R4 may or may not stand up to the torque of a big block, i have heard conflicting stories about that.  The only other thing you will need to change is the pedals which is pretty easy.  Other that its about a days worth of work.
