If the distributor is already out, and since we were talking about changing an intake manifold in the first place, I'll say it's not much work to take off a valve cover.
Rotate the engine over (clockwise, when standing in front of the engine) and watch the rockers for the #1 cylinder. Spin the engine around until the #1 intake closes. You are close to TDC now. Then just keep spinning the engine until the timing mark lines up on the balancer. You are now at TDC for #1. -Dave -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of John Nasta Sent: Friday, April 05, 2002 9:43 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: [Chevelle-List] Finding #1 TDC I'm not a big fan of the piston stop. What happens if it is too long? Well, you don't want to find out. I'm also not getting the idea about TDC being between the top of the combustion stroke and the top of the exhaust stroke. If that is what you're saying, it's not true. Maybe I am misunderstanding you though. Rotate the crankshaft CW until the stop contacts the piston. Mark the position of the damper timing mark on the block. Now rotate the crank CCW until the stop hits the piston and again mark the position of the timing mark. The halfway point between the 2 marked points will show you where TDC is, and if it's not the 0- degree mark on the timing tab you know that either the tab and damper are mismatched or the damper's outer ring has slipped. You can do this on either the compression stroke or the exhaust stroke as long as you remember which one you were on when it comes time to installing the distributor.
