You've got that right.  In the early 90's I used to show my car locally (up to 150 miles or so) almost every weekend.  Many times I'd take Friday off just to try and clean the weekly debris accumulation off the thing.  I'd see cars being pushed from the trailer to a show spot and wonder if it was all worth it.  You're going to have certain cliques that vote for each other but I think the general populous will vote fairly.
 
A local club I belonged to back then put on two shows a year that were participant judged.  Only rules we had were:
 
1. Trailered cars were lumped into more general categories than drivers.  Still had awards for both but just not as many classes for those that trailered.  It kept both camps happy.
2. For driven cars, we asked the participants not to consider the undercarriage, for obvious reasons.
3. Club members were exempt from the show.  We had a special "host club" best pick by the participants.
4. Any special awards such as Mayor's Choice, Commander's Pick, etc. were left up to that individual.
5. Since most people would vote for their own car, we put the registration number on the voting slips with instructions that they had to vote for the "second favorite :*)" in their class.  A vote for their own car was simply discarded.
 
There just isn't enough expert judge talent out there in my opinion and there are too many local shows.  I only wish we'd done what ACES does at CB and have a Top Three (or Top Two) Award schema instead of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

That another thing, daily driver car should get special consideration. It's a lot of work getting a daily driver, show car clean.

There is this guy i talk to, has a beatiful 67 chevelle. He was at one car show, some guys invited him to another. It was a long drive, so he put the velle on a trailer. When he gets there, the guy says no trailered cars. He reads all the rules, and it doesnt say anywhere that it cant be trailered. After a big argument, the guy finally let him in, but it couldnt be judged. Turns out, the jerk that wouldnt let him in, had a 67, and my friends 67 was alot better. He just didnt want to lose. Shows how messed up some people are. But in the end, my friend got him back, buy leaving a huge cloud of tire smoke in his face on the cruise lol....but i just remember that story...Mines no show stopper, just a daily driver, so i just go to chat and have fun!
