The problem is that anyone who has restored a car and put lots of time and money in it, wants to win or be acknowledged with a trophy or something. I am speaking of people who have done most of the hard work themselves. We are human and are raised on the reward and punishment system. You do good, you get rewarded etc. Anyone who put their own time, money and effort into a car, wants to be rewarded or acknowledged with a trophy. When we do not receive one, we feel disappointed. The tension at judging time, at the shows I went to, can be felt and seen on everyone faces. Why are we this way, I guess we are just human. What has been said about "doing it for yourself" is true. You have to tell yourself that your car, your time and effort, was done because you wanted to and not for some reward. In reality, the trophy really does not change anything, but just gives you something else to brag about. Every time I drive my car to the store, bank etc, someone says something. These commits really make me feel good. But most of all, I must feel good without any words or trophies, about what I have done. That is what is most important. Do your best job and be proud. Trophies over time will lose their value(and get lost or broken), but self pride never does. You can see this same problem at work. People do a good job and work hard, go around whining about how they should be making more money or should be given a supervisor or manager position. The people who seem to be making more money and who have good positions are the ones who did a good job and worked hard, but did it because they wanted to and were just raised that way. This is where the says comes from "Good things come to those who wait" My dad always told me to "Do the best you can, no matter want the task is and be proud" Self pride can never be replaced with a trophy. So I guess anytime we feel that we were not given just dues, we must take a step back, look at ourselves and accombilments and just say " I damn proud of what I have done and don't need anything else" I am Keith Cooper with a 71 Chevelle that I restored myself. I worked very hard on it. This is something I wanted to do since I was a teenager. I did a excellent job for my first restoration and I am damn proud of it. Keith C. Cooper
