It sounds like there's a good chance that it may be a fusible link problem.
I had the same problem a few years ago, and it turned out to be a fusible
link that ran along the radiator support on my '71.  If I remember right, it
was located behind the driver's side headlights, along the back side of the
radiator support.  I could be wrong about the location, 'cause it's been a
while...
