If the last two letters (before the L's) are actually IN this is a 66 396 325hp motor out of a 66 passenger car. Other possibilities IV, IW which are 396 325hp out of 65 passenger cars.

The strangest part is that there is no T1004IN for 1965 that I know of. The closest thing I can find for 1965 is:

T = Tonawanda

10 = October

04 = 4th

IX = 396CID, 375HP, 11:1 CR, w/ 4bbl & manual transmission.

I can?t find anything about any L's on the engine block.

Hi All,

I sent this to the list yesterday, Does any of you have a guess as to what these letters pertain to:

Here is an email I received from someone else with this information for a 65 396
can someone decipher this. The info is as follows:

Something interesting we came across on the block was: the engine code
format T1004IN are 3/16" high as per normal. Next to them, where the vin code
format are normally located is 7 digits, instead of numbers are the letters
LLLLLLL (7 times) these letters are 5/32" high as per normal for vin #'s

intake date is 1-22-5
block date is 1-25-5
head date G-21-5 and F-15-5
