I've done the same trick to replace a drivers side engine mount.  A jack under the crank snout with a block of wood between the jack and balancer should the trick.  The passenger mount will hold steady allowing the drivers side to rise.  Once up, put the 2x4 between the driver mount and the frame  - don't rely on the jack.
