Alcohol will loosen and wash out grime, but your clock also needs a light lubricant. I use TAL-5, which is made by the same company as WD-40 (but WD-40 is not really meant to be a lubricant). You might get some ideas from my dash clock project at http://johnnasta.com/6898/clockrepair
Also, IMO don't go quartz. The sweeping motion of the hand is not the same and people will be able to tell. Dip a toothpick in it and place a drop on all the little holes where the wheels sit and work it by moving the wheels. Do this several times to clean all the dust and grime out. It worked for me. I got the idea from a magazine. Why not just get a quartz clock?
