It does work for getting a general idea of what gear is in the rear. Bring both tires off the ground if a posi, I mark the tire on the inside and position this mark straight down. Then mark the drive shaft near the rear u-joint with reference to a stationary point on the axle housing. Slowly turn the marked tire and count the number of drive shaft revolutions to one full tire rotation. ie mine is a 3.73 so when the drive shaft turned 3 and 3/4s that was close enough to prove a 3.73.
Krister Meister Bloomingdale, IL '66 SS #'s Fellas.. Is there a good way to determine rear axle ratio without pulling the rear end apart and counting teeth.. Someone told me to turn one of the rear wheels, and see how many times the axle revolves, but that just didn't seem right when I tried it... Any ideas??
