Dan, Mine did about the same and I was wondering what I did wrong. I wonder if it has anything to do with an open differential.

Nope, Chevrolet never offered a gear ratio that low.  They started around 2.56 I think.  The most popular ratios are 2.73, 3.08, 3.23, 3.31, 3.55, 3.73
