The easiest way I know is to put the basecoat painted driveshaft in the 
balancer at a drive shaft shop, have it turn really slow.   HOld a roll 
of tape in your hand, and it unroll directly onto the shaft as it 
spins, and move your hand along the driveshaft as it rotates.  Voila! 
Spray your top color, let dry, remove tape.  

Of course this means you need to get in good with a local driveshaft 
shop.     Or, you could ask Patterson Driveshafts to do it for you.  
I'm pretty sure they would tape it and return it to you pretty 
reasonably.  http://www.pattersondriveshaft.com    .  Ask for Marc, 
he's done this to his own driveshaft.
