To Funny Dale... a local guy bough  a set of slotted mags at a yard sale, to match the ones he had on the front.. He jacked up the car ( ONE SIDE) and removed the rear tire and mounted the mag.. He then used scotch red and green sanding pads to clean it up.. and then polish it while it spun with the car running in gear.. Both wheels wee polished in no time and far outshined his on the front of the car.... So while he was at it , he removed the front wheel  and put it on the rear and started the eng. put in it  gear, and was set to polish away... only ONE problem these Mags had tires on them with valve stems.. rotating a high RPM.. he picks up the red scotch pad and folds it over his hand and pokes it into the spinning mag..... WELL a trip to the Hosp. and came home  missing his  ring finger.. DUGH  !
A good plan went astray

Never said to lay UNDER the car and watch the driveshaft, Wayne.  It's easy enough to look underneath the car while knealing BESIDE the car and see the point of the wire tie to see when it gets close to or just after the third revolution as the tire makes a full revolution.  After all, you have to have the 2nd person stop you at one tire revolution.  Unless you have a 4+ gear set, the tie is going to be real close to where it started (pointing straight down) to determine its final position at one full tire turn and will indicate a high 2+ or very low 3+ gear ratio.

It's not like the fella that wanted to take the hood off his car and have his buddy ride in the engine bay and look down the carb to see if the vacuum secondaries opened at full throttle. :*)

Thanks for a real  FOOL proof method. Dale ... Not being a Lawyer. I think I would include a disclaimer in this technique.
A guy gets  a Bazillions Dollars because his Motor Home RV  called Cruise control " Auto Pilot" and he left the controls to get a cup of Java !
Just the thought of one person driving and another laying on the ground watching the drive shaft could = disaster
One positive note... they would be candidate for the Chevelle Darwin Award    :)

Here's another method you can use and takes two people.  Get a large wire tie and snug it around the driveshaft with what's left pointing down (6:00 position) as a reference, i.e., don't snip off the end.  Make a chalk mark on the tire at its lowest point on the ground.  Carefully push or drive car one full tire revolution while 2nd person watches the wire tie on the driveshaft and counts the full revs.  When the tire has made one full turn, look at the wire tie.  How many full turns did it make and where it is now in relation to pointing straight down.  Did it make just over 3 turns - could be 3.07 or 3.08; 3 1/4 turns - 3.23, etc. That will get you close to the final ratio with whatever wheels/tires are on the car now.
