Reverse flow water pumps are used on serpentine single belt systems.  Normally the water pump is driven with the crank in a clockwise rotation with a V belt or even a flat belt where the belt comes up the same side on the crank and water pump pulleys.  With a single serpentine belt system, the belt may move from one side of the water pump pulley to the other side of the crank pulley and the water pump turns other way (backwards).  Check http://www.marchperf.com/contents.html for views of standard vs. reverse rotation pulleys and follow the movement of the belt(s).

Beware of term "serpentine" meaning reverse flow pumps required or a single belt to run everything.  To me, serpentine belt systems means one belt driving all accessories, crank-water pump-alternator-p/s-a/c.  To some, it simply means a flat belt as opposed to a V belt system.  I have a March "serpentine belt" system on my 67 396.  It has two belts.  One runs from the crank to the p/s and a/c.  A second belt runs from the crank to water pump and alt.  To me, nothing "serpentine" about them, just wider belts for reliability.  Again, that's my definition of "serpentine" and not the industry's.  Personally, I think they're capitalizing on a current buzzword.

Subject: [Chevelle-list] Reverse Flow Water Pumps

I was looking at the PAW catalog last night (my Christmas wish book) and saw reverse flow water pumps for big blocks. I am curious why reverse flow would be desired and what other modifications this requires? Is this for racing only, or is it a good street modification? Anyone have a BBC with such a modification? As always, thanks for your help. This is a great list.
